As exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2021!
My Chinese takeaway box challenges the perceptions of Chinese culture and labour. The former has long been rightfully revered in the West, whereas the latter has been historically undervalued as dirty and unskilled. For many in the Chinese diaspora, restaurants and takeways are a key part of our cultural heritage and this piece intends to honour the sacrifices, labour and humanity of the generations before us.
Each box is made from high quality, high white porcelain from Jingdezhen, the centre of imperial ceramics in the Ming and Qing dynasties. They have then been fired at high temperatures and glazed using traditional methods. Each is hand painted with the iconic five-clawed dragon and blue and white porcelain designs. Different designs and colours are possible, please get in touch to discuss.
